Just a Thought

As the sun began to set and shroud the plains in darkness a gentle wind started to blow. The five travelers got rigid and stopped setting up camp for a brief moment as they waited for the weather to turn…they wondered if the weather machine was really destroyed. The wind continued to blow through the camp and they all eased up. The Professor quickly scanned his surroundings, taking everything in. He looked at his four friends: JJ was sitting by the fire looking down the sights of lucky out into the distance as if half expecting something to pop up. Till and Eli were helping Alvaro set up his tent. His leg looked pretty bad, but a lesser man would be in worse shape. The Professor’s attention drifted back to JJ as a wave of thoughts crashed upon his mind.

“I’ll need another sample…” St. Claire thought to himself. “It would be wise to do it when he went dormant again to see if I could replicate the defensive response.” Feeling JJ’s eyes on him the Professor nodded and quickly turned away. Alvaro limped across his field of vision and the Professor observed. “I approximate the injury has reduced Alvaro’s gait by roughly twenty percent.” The Professor pulled out his notebook and began to sketch the robot that inflicted the wound. “What a wonderful device…absolutely wonderful! It’s a pity it destroyed itself after we disabled it…what a treat it would have been to study. As soon as we finish the business in Deadwood it will be nice to get back to my real work. It’s been so long since I’ve made any progress. Prof. Finley will be concerned at the lack of an update. I must remember to send a wire to Oxford with all due haste.” He thought about his mentor for a few moments and then was shocked back to reality as he remembered the whole Moscow debacle a few years back and the water torture. He shuddered at the thought of the nasty gulag he was thrown into for several weeks as they checked his credentials. “A lesson never to be forgotten…as important as my work is, never tell the Russian police that you would happily side with the Cossacks if that will get you to the excavation site faster.”

Professor St. Claire made his way to his tent and lied down. So much had happened in the last few days. The battle at the fort, JJ coming back from the dead, Hellstromme’s factory obliterating a town with controlled weather, and of course that brilliant female scientist escaping. St. Claire felt sorry for her…so delusional…to actually think she was so close to Hellstromme…such wasted potential. “I will make sure to never fall into such a trap. One must always keep their mind sharp and never let others inhibit the way of progress. Allowing such silly notions of affection to get in the way of science.” The Professor, who’s mind was always flitting from subject to subject found his focus lingering on the silly girl longer than he would have liked. “No matter, we will be far from this place in no time.” Picking up one of his science journals he got passing through a small trade town he began to absorb the knowledge until drifting to sleep.
